Here’s a question we occasionally expect from customers.
“Why isn’t my T-shirt already sitting in a warehouse waiting to be posted?”
Fair question.
The answer is surprisingly simple.
Because we’re not Kmart.
And because producing 10,000 shirts in every possible design, colour and size would require a warehouse roughly the size of Tasmania.
Instead, Lynch Wisbey operates largely on a made-to-order T-shirt model.
Here’s what that means, how it works and why we’ve chosen to do things this way.
What Are Made-to-Order T-Shirts?
Made-to-order T-shirts are garments that are printed or produced after a customer places an order.
Rather than keeping every design in every size permanently in stock, we prepare merchandise according to what customers actually purchase.
For example, you might order a particular design in black, size XL.
Once your order has been received and processed, that specific combination is prepared for production.
Simple.
It also means we’re not sitting around wondering what to do with 400 unsold size XS shirts featuring a joke nobody understood.
Why Print T-Shirts to Order?
There are several practical reasons.
1. More Designs, Less Unnecessary Stock
Traditional merchandise businesses often need to purchase large quantities of garments before they know which designs customers will actually want.
That can mean significant upfront costs and leftover stock.
Printing to order allows us to offer a wider selection of designs without producing every possible variation in advance.
More choice for customers.
Fewer boxes of forgotten T-shirts.
Everybody wins.
2. Different Sizes and Colours
Many of our designs are available across a range of unisex sizes, with black and white garment options depending on the artwork.
Made-to-order production gives us flexibility when fulfilling different combinations.
Of course, garment availability can still vary, so always check the individual product listing before purchasing.
3. Production Based on Actual Demand
There isn’t much point printing hundreds of shirts if only a handful of people want them.
Made-to-order production helps us match output to actual customer demand and reduce the risk of unnecessary unsold merchandise.
It’s a practical approach for an independent Australian merchandise business.
And frankly, we’d rather spend our time creating ridiculous new designs than counting dusty boxes.
Does Made-to-Order Mean Slower Delivery?
Sometimes, yes.
Because your garment may need to be printed after purchase, there’s a production stage before your order can be dispatched.
Production times depend on factors such as the design, garment availability and current order volumes.
Once your merchandise is ready, it can be packed and shipped.
It’s important to remember that production time and delivery time are two different things.
A shirt doesn’t magically teleport from the printer to your letterbox.
Although if Australia Post ever figures that one out, we’ll be first in line.
What About Returns and Exchanges?
Because most Lynch Wisbey shirts are made to order, we generally don’t offer exchanges or refunds simply because a customer changes their mind or selects the wrong size.
That’s why we encourage customers to review sizing and product information carefully before ordering.
However, made-to-order does not mean consumer rights disappear.
If your garment is faulty, incorrectly supplied or doesn’t meet Australian Consumer Law guarantees, you’re still entitled to the remedies provided by law.
Common sense. Fair treatment. No funny business.
